How to Build a Workbench

Having a workbench of your own is a great asset to have at home. If you are fond of working on simple building projects, having a bench of your own can be practical. A workbench makes things a lot easier.

However, if you don't have any prior experience on building, there are plans available online on workbench designs.

Workbench Designs Materials

Measure your workspace first before starting on your workbench designs and plans. It is significant to measure your workspace to be able to determine how much wood you are actually going to need. Bring the measurements with you when you are going to the hardware store.

Next step on completing your workbench designs is to determine the kind of lumber that you should use. Usually, most workbench designs have written down the kinds of screws and wood to purchase. Hence, if you are looking forward to building a withstanding bench that you may use on a daily basis, you should use beech wood. Beech wood is the common type of wood used for a durable day-to-day bench.

For those who wants a lighter and portable bench, you may create a workbench out of birch wood. Birch wood may not be as thick as beech but it is durable and can create a sturdy workbench.

Here are other materials that are needed:

- Circular saw
- Drill or Screws and screw driver
- Lumber (amount depends on what plan you followed)
- Corner square
- Hammer
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Belt sander
- Nuts, bolts, nails and wood glue
- Clamps
- Eye protection

It is not necessary to have high-powered tools such as electric drills. However, having these tools can speed up the process of building your workbench.

Steps on Workbench Designs

If you already have your materials and equipment, it's time to start workbench designs.

First, you need to cut the wood. Cut the pieces of wood according to right sizes. Drill the holes which will be used for lag screws. Then, drill a ¼ inch hole though a 1 ¾ inch countersink. The top rails and lower rails are centered on the wooden legs.

Then, the next step on finishing workbench designs is to put together the pieces. Start with the posts and then the long rails. Glue the lag screws. Set aside the posts and rails until the glue is all dried up.

Merge the two sides using the shorter rails. Glue the lower and the upper middle stretchers together with deck screws. Glue the plywood on the surface of your workbench with wood glue and screw with 1 ¼ screws.

And that's it!
